Cases: a few of our friends at LAPS
Oliver
It has been three weeks since we received a telephone call about an injured and very sick dog lying on the side of the street in an old and congested part of Peshawar city. Being the only animal shelter for dogs in the area, this was one of many such routine calls that we receive on a daily basis. Our ambulance was busy with another emergency, so we asked the caller if he would be kind enough to transport the animal to the LAPS clinic and shelter. His response was that it was difficult but he would try. We hear that often, and it mostly means nothing will happen. So, not expecting anything further, we moved on to other tasks and activities at the shelter.
An hour or so later, there was a knock on our shelter gate. A LAPS staff member responded, and came running back to tell us that someone was at the gate with a very sick dog. I went to look for myself, and realized t he was the same person I had spoken to earlier. What I wasn’t prepared for was what he showed me lying in the trunk of his car.
I am at a loss for words. The pictures and videos speak for themselves. The poor soul had been lying like this, close to death on the busy streets, for God alone knows how long, totally ignored by passers-by, till this kind man came along and brought him to us.
Initial medical exams indicated a variety of various ailments ranging from severe dehydration to extreme skin infections and mange. The poor soul even had injuries from cruel people and kids throwing stones at him. What has this world come to??
Like all our other animals at LAPS, we have given him a name and an identity and wanted to share his story with you. Oliver is now under our care. He is receiving the best possible care that we are able to provide him. He is responding to all the treatments, eating his meals regularly, loves cookies and treats and has made the move with us to our new facility. Oliver has also made many friends, and it is such a joy to see him wagging his tail and starting to play with the other dogs. Fur has also started to grow, and we cannot wait for Oliver to have all his hair back.

Muffin
In the short time since we have established LAPS in Peshawar, we have seen and experienced many auto accident injuries, savage and gruesome animal abuse crimes, abandoned animals and so on.
This past week though was one of our saddest and gut wrenching. This little puppy, who is now our Muffin, was rescued and brought to the shelter by Rabia. Muffin was the victim of a hit & run car accident, and was found lying in some shrubs and bushes in the Hayatabad area. Her right front leg was badly mangled and damaged. This was in addition to all the shock, trauma and other ailments she was suffering from.
To make matters worse, our medical team determined during treatment and examination that gangrene had set in her damaged leg. Another 24 hours and we would have lost her.
No expense was spared and we have used our own resources to provide Muffin the best possible treatment and care. Sadly a part of her right leg had to be amputated. She now needs plenty of post care treatment. If anyone would like to step up and help us by sponsoring Muffin’s treatment and medical bills it would be God sent. Thank You.
Bella
Bella was spotted emaciated and injured, limping on the side of the road as she made her way into the thick brush, by a good Samaritan who stopped his car, rescued her and brought her to LAPS.
An X-ray revealed that the injured leg had a fractured bone. The vet estimated that the injury had happened at least a week prior and likely from being hit by a car. The poor dog was suffering on her own without any food, shelter or medical care for over seven days.
Even through all the pain, Bella was still wagging her tail and seeking affection from our shelter staff. Bella underwent surgery to repair the fracture. Soon with pain medications, antibiotics and love, Bella started the recovery process and 3-4 weeks after surgery she was a completely different dog.
Brutus
Waiting at the door...Brutus, an abandoned Labrador looking out the window for his owner today, moments after he walked out the door. The dog’s leg was injured in an automobile accident, and owner is unable to look after him. LAPS is his forever home now with lots and lots of new friends. We will nurse him back to good health, and give him all the love he needs.
Carmel
Sweet ‘Carmel’- always smiling and happy, was rescued three years ago from a garbage dumpster in Peshawar city, and brought to LAPS in a gunny sack because people were throwing stones at her and no one wanted to touch her or feed her. She has now fully recovered from her ailments and the miserable condition she was found in. Today she is a favorite and one of the most lovable, huggable and sweet animals at LAPS.
